Mating behaviour, mate choice and female resistance in the bean flower thrips (Megalurothrips sjostedti)

چکیده
Abstract Many species of thrips (Thysanoptera) in the family Thripidae form mating aggregations, but adaptive significance these aggregations and extent male female mate choice is poorly understood. We studied behaviour bean flower Megalurothrips sjostedti (Trybom) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), which forms occurs across sub-Saharan Africa. tested whether males choose mates by age or status. No-choice bioassays with one were used to simulate way usually encounter only at a time field. Virgin females violently resisted attempts males, we found no compelling evidence establish this was indiscriminate screening suitable males. Younger (1–2 days old) did not discriminate 7–10 old), older (7–10 avoided females. Any status (virgin mated) weak absent. The M. shows broad similarities that other also some distinct novel differences, can help our understanding aggregations.

Active aggregation among sexes in bean flower thrips (Megalurothrips sjostedti) on cowpea (Vigna unguiculata)
Male sexual aggregations are a common territorial, mating-related or resource-based, behaviour observed in diverse organisms, including insects such as thrips. The influence of factors such as plant substrate, time of day, and geographic location on aggregation of thrips is uncertain, therefore we monitored the dispersion of male and female bean flower thrips (BFT), Megalurothrips sjostedti (Tr...
متن کاملRepellency of Plant Extracts against the Legume Flower Thrips Megalurothrips sjostedti (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)
Megalurothrips sjostedti Trybom is an important pest of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) in Africa. To propose an alternative to chemical control, the repellency of 24 plant extracts was evaluated against adult female thrips of M. sjostedti in the laboratory. Plant extracts in ethanol were separately applied on a filter paper disk in a still air visual cue olfactometer. The results showed highly s...
متن کاملFemale mate choice in mammals.
Studies of mate choice in vertebrates have focused principally on birds, in which male ornaments are often highly developed, and have shown that females commonly select mates on the basis of particular phenotypic characteristics that may reflect their genetic quality. Studies of female mate choice in mammals are less highly developed and they have commonly focused on female mating preferences t...
متن کاملSpatio-Temporal Dynamics of Field Cricket Calling Behaviour: Implications for Female Mate Search and Mate Choice
Amount of calling activity (calling effort) is a strong determinant of male mating success in species such as orthopterans and anurans that use acoustic communication in the context of mating behaviour. While many studies in crickets have investigated the determinants of calling effort, patterns of variability in male calling effort in natural choruses remain largely unexplored. Within-individu...
متن کاملFemale mate assessment and choice behavior affect the frequency of alternative male mating tactics
Explanations for the existence of alternative male mating tactics focus primarily on male–male competition. Mating systems, however, are composed of interactions both within and between the sexes, and the role of female behavior in shaping male mating tactics should not be overlooked. By using a dynamic state variable game model, I examine how female mate assessment and choice behavior affect t...
